Iran Silk Road Tour

We open at Shahriar House, the preserved home of Iran’s most beloved contemporary Persian-Azerbaijani poet — an intimate and human start to a journey through Silk Road civilization. The Blue Mosque (Masjed-e Kabud) follows, its deep lapis tilework among the most stunning in northwestern Iran.
At the Azerbaijan Museum, pre-Islamic and Silk Road-era artifacts bring the region’s ancient past to life. The Constitutional Revolution Museum reveals Tabriz’s defining role in Iran’s democratic uprising of 1905 — proof that this city has always shaped history. A visit to the ancient Jameh Mosque, with its weathered brickwork and serene interior, leads us finally into the Tabriz Grand Bazaar (UNESCO WHS) — where Azari carpets, spices, copper goods, and crafts have filled these vaulted corridors since the caravan era.

We make a day trip to Kandovan, a volcanic village of extraordinary character southwest of Tabriz (round trip ≈ 106 km/ 2.5 hrs). Passing through the town of Osku and into beautiful mountain scenery, we arrive at one of the most unusual human settlements in the world. For over 700 years, the people of Kandovan have carved their homes directly into the towering cone-shaped volcanic rock formations that rise from the valley floor — so that the entire village resembles a gigantic termite colony fused with a mountain. These cave-homes are not ruins. They are still lived in today, with families raising livestock, tending gardens, and piping water through channels in the rock above their ceilings (Read more).
On our return to Tabriz, we visit El Goli (Shah Goli) — a grand Qajar-era garden park built around a large artificial lake, its historic pavilion rising from the water at the center. A peaceful place to walk, reflect, and watch the city unwind at the close of the day.

We drive south to Zanjan (≈ 300 km/ 4 hrs), stopping at the Gonbad-e Soltaniyeh (UNESCO WHS) — the world’s second-largest brick dome, built in the early 14th century and surpassed in size only by Florence Cathedral, which was constructed afterward and whose architects almost certainly drew on its example. Standing beneath this vast double-shelled structure, you understand why medieval European travelers came home from Persia with stories of engineering that their own continent could barely imagine.
We explore the Zanjan Bazaar and end the day with a traditional dinner at Zanjan’s magnificent Safavid-era caravanserai — a fitting beginning to a journey that will follow these inns across the length of Iran.

We drive southeast toward Tehran (≈ 330 km/ 4 hrs) with a stop in Qazvin — itself a former Safavid capital and a key node on the northern branch of the Silk Road. Here we visit the Saʿadossaltaneh Caravanserai (UNESCO WHS), one of the largest and best-preserved historic caravanserais in Iran, its vast courtyard arcades and domed cells a vivid illustration of the scale on which Persian rulers organized and profited from Silk Road trade.

We explore Qazvin’s historic bazaar and old quarter before continuing to Tehran, built on the foundations of ancient Ray — the great junction city where the Khorasan Highway divided into its northern and southern branches and where the fate of the Silk Road was decided for a thousand years.

We begin our day in Tehran at the National Museum of Iran, whose Achaemenid goldwork, Sassanid silver, and Silk Road ceramics form one of the world’s great archaeological collections.
We continue to the Golestan Palace (UNESCO WHS), the magnificent 19th-century royal complex whose mirrored halls, tiled towers, and lush gardens reflect the full grandeur of Qajar-era Persia. We end the day in the Grand Bazaar of Tehran — one of the largest and most active bazaars in the Middle East — to watch the city’s ancient mercantile soul at work.

We make our way southward to Isfahan (≈ 500 km/ 6 hrs) with a stop in Kashan — one of the most elegant cities on the Silk Road’s southern sub-route, famous for its opulent merchant houses and its extraordinary Persian gardens.
We visit the Fin Garden (UNESCO WHS), one of the oldest Persian gardens in existence and a template for the paradise garden concept that spread from Persia across the Islamic world. We explore the Tabatabaei House, a magnificent 19th-century merchant mansion whose wind-towers, stained-glass, and painted ceilings represent the peak of traditional Persian domestic architecture — wealth built directly on Silk Road commerce. We visit the Sultan Amir Ahmad Hammām, a beautifully preserved historic bathhouse whose tiled domes and muqarnas-adorned chambers offer a vivid glimpse into the daily rituals of a Silk Road city.
We then continue to Isfahan — the city about which Persians say “Esfahan nesf-e jahan”: Isfahan is half the world — and arrive in time for dinner in this extraordinary city.

A full day dedicated to the heart of Isfahan. We begin at the Isfahan Jameh Mosque (Friday Mosque) (UNESCO WHS) — one of the oldest and most architecturally layered mosques in Iran, a living record of 1,400 years of Persian Islamic architecture built up across successive dynasties, each leaving its mark on the same sacred space.
From there we move to the Naqsh-e Jahan Square (UNESCO WHS) — one of the largest and most beautiful public squares ever built — and spend the morning exploring all three of its great monuments in turn: the Shah (Royal) Mosque, its towering portal and double-shelled dome covered in some of the finest tilework in the Islamic world; the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, intimate and perfectly proportioned, its interior a masterpiece of light and geometric complexity; and Ali Qapu Palace, the six-story royal gateway whose upper music room — carved with the silhouettes of vessels and instruments to enhance its acoustics — is one of the most surprising spaces in Persian architecture.
In the afternoon we visit Hasht Behesht Palace (Palace of Eight Paradises), a jewel-box Safavid pavilion set in a formal garden, its mirrored interiors and painted vaults a study in Persian decorative genius. We close the day at the Isfahan Music Museum, a rare and intimate collection of traditional Persian instruments tracing the musical heritage of the Silk Road civilization — an unexpectedly moving final note to a day immersed in the arts of one of history’s great empires.

We begin the morning in New Julfa, the Armenian Christian quarter that Shah Abbas I created when he relocated the entire Armenian community of Julfa to Isfahan — one of the most striking examples of the Silk Road’s role in moving not just goods but entire peoples and their cultures across continents.
The Vank Cathedral here contains frescoes that fuse Armenian Christian iconography with Persian Islamic decorative tradition in a way found nowhere else on earth; its small museum houses rare manuscripts, maps, and objects that document the centuries-long presence of this community in the heart of Persia.
After lunch, the afternoon is free — a perfect opportunity to return to Naqsh-e Jahan Square for a final visit at leisure, browse the Qeysarieh Bazaar for carpets, miniatures, and Isfahan’s celebrated handicrafts, or simply wander.
In the evening, we walk to the Zayandeh River to see the Si-o-se Pol Bridge (Bridge of 33 Arches) and the Khaju Bridge by night — illuminated and alive with Isfahanis who gather here after dark to sing, recite poetry, and promenade, a tradition as old as the bridges themselves. It is one of the most quietly magical experiences in all of Iran.

We make our way south to Shiraz (≈ 405 km/ 5 hrs).  The road between Isfahan and Shiraz follows the ancient southern Silk Road sub-route and passes by two UNESCO WHS caravanserais — Amin Abad and Mahyar — both built during the Safavid era to serve merchants traveling this busy corridor. We admire them from the road as living markers of the ancient trade route beneath our wheels.
Before reaching Shiraz, we stop at Izadkhast — a breathtaking fortified village and complex perched on a sheer rock outcrop above a river gorge, inhabited since the Sassanid period and used as a royal waystation on the southern Silk Road route. Its position — commanding, isolated, and almost vertigo-inducing — makes it one of the most dramatic architectural sites in Iran and one of the least visited by international travelers.
We arrive in Shiraz and begin our exploration with the Arg-e Karim Khan (Karim Khan Citadel), the magnificent fortress-palace built by Karim Khan Zand when he made Shiraz the capital of Iran 250 years ago. From there we explore the Vakil Bazaar, one of the finest surviving bazaars in Iran, and close the day at the Eram Garden (UNESCO WHS) — one of the most celebrated Persian gardens in existence, its cypress-lined pools, fragrant rose beds, and elegant Qajar pavilion a living embodiment of the paradise garden concept that Persia gave to the world.

Today is one of the defining days of any Iran Silk Road tour. We drive to Persepolis (UNESCO WHS) — the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire, built by Darius I and Xerxes in the 5th century BC. The Apadana Palace reliefs show delegations from 23 nations bringing tribute — the earliest visual record of the multi-civilizational exchange that the Silk Road would later institutionalize at continental scale.
Afterward, we visit Naqsh-e Rostam (Necropolis), where four Achaemenid kings are buried in cliff-face tombs above magnificent Sassanid rock reliefs — the two Persian empires that together created the political and commercial infrastructure on which the Silk Road ran for more than a millennium.
We return to Shiraz (round trip ≈ 140 km/3 hrs) and spend the evening at the Tomb of Hafez, where Iranians gather every evening to recite his 14th-century poems aloud, a tradition that has not broken in 600 years.

Today involves a long but rewarding drive east from Shiraz to Kerman (≈ 570 km/ 8 hrs) across the southern Iranian plateau, with the landscape shifting from the green hills around Shiraz into the open, arid grandeur of the desert basin. On the way, we stop at Sarvestan Palace (part of the UNESCO WHS Sassanid Archaeological Landscape)— a remarkable Sassanid-era structure dating to the 5th century AD, one of the finest surviving examples of pre-Islamic Persian palace architecture, its grand domed halls and barrel-vaulted corridors a direct predecessor of the Islamic architectural tradition that would later produce the great monuments of Isfahan and Yazd. This is the Silk Road in its oldest layer: the Sassanid Empire at the peak of its power, when Persian kings controlled the trade routes between East and West and built in stone and brick accordingly.
Kerman itself is the fifth-oldest city in Iran and one of the most strategically important Silk Road cities on the southern route, where caravans from India, Arabia, and Central Asia converged in the heart of the desert. We arrive and begin to discover how an entire civilization learned not merely to survive but to flourish in one of the most arid environments on earth.

A rich day exploring the spiritual and sensory depths of the Kerman region. We visit the Moshtagh Alishah Tower, one of Kerman’s most atmospheric Sufi monuments; and explore the extraordinarily beautiful Ganjali Khan Complex — a perfectly preserved Safavid ensemble of hammām (bathhouse), mosque, caravanserai (UNESCO WHS), bazaar, and mint all centered on a single square. The Ganjali Khan Hammām is among the finest traditional bathhouses in Iran, its domed chambers decorated with painted figures of Silk Road merchants and court attendants.
We visit the Kerman Jameh Mosque with its majestic Persian structure; then drive to Mahan in the afternoon (round trip ≈ 75 km/ 1 hr). Here, the Shah Nematollah Vali Shrine — mausoleum of the founder of the great Nematollahi Sufi order — draws dervishes and pilgrims from across the Islamic world. Adjacent to the shrine, the Shahzadeh (Prince’s) Garden (UNESCO WHS) is a green paradise carved from bare desert: terraced pools, fountains, cypress lanes, and the snow-capped mountains of Kerman province rising behind it.

This is the day that separates an ordinary Iran tour from a genuine Silk Road experience. We drive toward Yazd across the open desert and stop for the night at the Zein-o-din Caravanserai (UNESCO WHS) (≈ 300 km/ 4 hrs) — a 16th-century Safavid fortress-inn sitting alone in the desert 60 km from the nearest town, exactly where it has stood since caravans paused here on the three-day journey between Kerman and Yazd. Built during the reign of Shah Abbas I as one of his 999 caravanserais, Zein-o-ddin is the only perfectly circular caravanserai in Iran. Its thick mud-brick walls enclose a central courtyard where travelers once settled their camels and exchanged news from the road. A handful of its domed chambers now accommodate overnight guests. We watch the desert sunset from the rooftop, eat dinner in the central hall, and sleep under the same ancient dome that sheltered merchants from across the known world.

Please note: Overnight accommodation inside Zein-o-Din Caravanserai is subject to availability. The number of rooms is limited, and the caravanserai occasionally closes for restoration works or hosts private events and cultural programms. If an overnight stay inside the caravanserai is not possible, we will spend the evening visiting and exploring the site before continuing to Yazd for the night.

We arrive in Yazd (≈ 80 km / 1 hr) — the world’s second-oldest continuously inhabited city, and one of the most important Silk Road cities in Iran.
We open with a drive to the Zoroastrian Towers of Silence (Dakhme) on the desert plain outside the city — the ancient hilltop platforms where the Zoroastrian community practiced sky burial for two millennia, the surrounding landscape of bare earth and distant mountains perfectly matching the solemnity of the place. Back in the city, we visit the Zoroastrian Fire Temple, where a sacred flame has burned without interruption since 470 AD — the oldest burning fire in the world, tended continuously through the rise and fall of empires.
We then visit the Yazd Jameh Mosque, its soaring twin minarets the tallest portal towers in Iran, the tilework of its façade among the finest expressions of Persian Islamic architecture in existence. The afternoon is spent wandering Yazd old town (UNESCO WHS) — a labyrinth of mud-brick lanes, wind-towers (bādgirs), and domed rooftops that has changed little in a thousand years, best explored without a map. We end the day at the Amir Chakhmaq Complex, a dramatic three-story stepped façade overlooking a large square, its symmetry and scale most spectacular at dusk when the structure is illuminated.

We drive north into the Dasht-e Kavir — the Great Salt Desert, one of the most inhospitable and most beautiful landscapes on earth (≈ 375 km/ 5.5 hrs):
On the way we stop at Kharanaq Village — an extraordinary semi-abandoned mud-brick settlement perched beside a living village, its crumbling tower and ancient houses spilling down a hillside like a slow-motion archaeological site, inhabited and abandoned in overlapping layers across more than a thousand years. We also aim to stop at the Anjireh Sangi Caravanserai (UNESCO WHS), a striking stone-built Silk Road inn in the desert that stands as a testament to the engineering determination of Persian builders in the harshest possible terrain.
We continue to Bayazeh Village with its historic Safavid-era caravanserai, before arriving at Mesr — an oasis settlement on the edge of the salt flats, surrounded by extraordinary golden sand dunes. We watch the sunset bleed across the dunes and spend the night under the most unblemished starry sky in Iran.

We drive north to Damghan — one of the most historically significant and least-visited cities on the real Silk Road route (≈ 300 km/ 4.5 hrs). Damghan was the ancient Parthian capital of Hecatompylos (City of 100 Gates) in the 1st century BC, a major Silk Road hub long before Islam arrived, and one of the most important waypoints on the Khorasan Highway.
We visit the Tarikhaneh Mosque — one of the oldest surviving mosques in Iran, built on the foundations of a Sassanid fire temple, its forest of ancient columns among the most atmospheric spaces in the country. We also visit the Chehel Dokhtaran Tower (Tower of Forty Daughters), a breathtaking 12th-century Seljuk minaret of intricate brickwork, and the Pir-e Alamdar shrine, another Seljuk-era monument that has stood on this ancient road for nearly a millennium.
Damghan sits precisely at the border where the dry, desert heart of Iran meets the green, forested slopes descending to the Caspian Sea — a transition you can feel in the air.

Today is a long travel day (≈ 570 km/ 7 hrs). But this is no ordinary highway: for almost its entire length, this road is the ancient Khorasan Highway itself — the main artery of the Persian Silk Road, traveled by caravans, armies, pilgrims, and poets for over a thousand years.
The journey is a UNESCO landscape in its own right. Along this route stand seven UNESCO World Heritage caravanserais, each one a surviving waypoint of the ancient trade road: Mayāmey, Miāndasht, Abbās Ābād, Mazinān, Mehr, Zafarāniyeh, and Fakhr-e Dāvūd. We pass by several of these, or stop at one or two as time and road conditions allow. Some are visible from the highway as dramatic ruins rising from the plain, others stand just off the highway. No stretch of road in Iran brings the physical reality of the Silk Road more vividly to life. We arrive in Mashhad — the spiritual anchor of the eastern Khorasan Highway — in the evening.

A half day in Mashhad, the city that grew around the tomb of Imam Reza, the eighth Imam of Shi’a Islam, who died and was buried here in 818 AD on the Khorasan Highway. The Imam Reza Holy Shrine receives up to 30 million pilgrims a year — walking through its vast interconnected courtyards, prayer halls, and golden-domed sanctuaries among tens of thousands of worshippers is one of the most extraordinary human experiences available to any traveler anywhere on earth. We spend time in the shrine complex, visit the Quds Razavi Museum within the shrine grounds, and explore the Bazaar Reza, still trading in the spices, textiles, saffron, and devotional goods that caravans carried through this city for centuries. The afternoon is free — to return to the shrine at your own pace, explore the city’s markets, or simply rest before the final days of the journey.

A full day at the eastern terminus of the Khorasan Highway. We visit Tous (Tus), the ancient Silk Road city near Mashhad and birthplace of Ferdowsi — the greatest poet of the Persian language, whose Shahnameh (Book of Kings) is the longest epic poem written by a single author in world history, and the work that preserved the Persian language and identity through centuries of conquest. His magnificent mausoleum in Tous is one of the most important cultural sites in Iran (round trip ≈ 60 km/ 1.15 hrs).
We also visit the ruins of ancient Tous and the Harouniyeh Dome, a 12th-century monument associated with the great Islamic philosopher Imam al-Ghazali. We return to Mashhad for a final evening in this extraordinary city, whose shrine complex — illuminated, vast, and crowded at all hours of the night — is unlike anything else in the world of travel.

In the evening or late at night, transfer to Mashhad International Airport for your onward international flight. Your 21-day Iran Silk Road journey ends here, at the eastern terminus of the Khorasan Highway — the same point where the ancient road dissolved into the mountains of Central Asia and the caravans dispersed toward China, India, and the steppe.
